What Is the Difference Between Morality and Ethics?

What Is the Difference Between Morality and Ethics?
By Gordon E Newman

What is the question?

Both ethics and morality assist is in answering the question: What should I do?

We are faced with this question all the time. Too often we make important decisions without giving enough time or process to reaching the best answer. Why not? Often we simply don't know how to make such decisions. Sometimes we ignore them and hope they will go away, sometimes we follow the advice of others, sometimes we just guess.

If we wish to be responsible for our own future and our own decisions we should spend a little time thinking and trying to make a good decision, a better decision than simply choosing the easiest answer.

So, ethics and morality assist us in answering the question: What should I do?

Do they provide the same answer? No.

Which is the better approach and why?

What is the difference between morality and ethics?

Many of us confuse ethics and morality, many people use them interchangeably. But they are very, very different, related but different. The difference is crucial when making important decisions, even deciding whether you are facing a moral dilemma or an ethical dilemma. Important when discussing such popular topics as religion, sexuality, good and bad, right or wrong. So, take a few minutes now to better understand the difference between morality and ethics.

Please, don't refer to the dictionary. Dictionaries attempt to capture popular usage and much of popular usage of ethics and morality is very blurred. Here I can show you how to use each word precisely, and make these words as sharp tools to cut through some pretty complicated ideas.

Morality

Morality is a set of rules or guidelines by which we behave. Simple? Yes, very simple but the implications are very important.

Morals answer problems we face in life. Morals are written down; they're defined answers to defined problems. Examples that come to mind are: Stealing is immoral. Adultery is immoral. Killing another person is immoral. Abortion is immoral. Homosexuality is immoral. Burning the Christian Bible is immoral.

Now you must appreciate that someone must decide upon these rules or guidelines. In the case of the Bible's Ten Commandments that were handed down from the Mount thousands of years ago, these rules were spoken and written by the Christian God and then possibly transcribed and interpreted by Moses. As a general rule, morality is determined by others and followed by people who share certain values.

The Ten Commandments were a set of ten rules which defined the behaviour of a group of people many years ago. The rules were effective in that they devolved the Ten Commandments into practical laws and a social structure which defined a people. They provided stability and provided the basis for an ongoing identity and development.

The fact that morality provides stability is a very important and powerful aspect of morality. When the environment changes, when the old leaders and mentors die, morality enables their values, their rules to continue. So people have stability. A change in leadership does not mean everyone must start again. People feel and are more secure when things are stable. Change and uncertainty are somewhat scary. Morality provides a basis for a comforting stability.

"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife" is my recall of (part of) one of the Ten Commandments. Most people would agree that it is not good to try to seduce your neighbour's wife (which may be the result if you desire her enough). Even today it would result in some pretty nasty outcomes if everyone went around seducing each other's wife right, left and centre. It could damage the society substantially. So that is a pretty useful rule to apply within most societies then and today.

In summary, morality is a set of common values that provide stability for societies and differentiate between societies.

Ethics

Ethics is an approach, a method of making decisions. Ethics is about deciding to the best of our ability, without fear or favour. It is about being aware of the many aspects of each issue and trying to include them into the decision making process. It is about being aware of the outcome of our decisions, good and bad.

Ethics is about making a well-considered decision and having the moral courage to accept the responsibility of our decision.

Ethics is more a way of approaching decisions, ethics is not a set of values but a way of developing values for a certain situation as it is understood.

Do you see how it differs from morality? Morality is a set of values that are applied, ethics is a way to solve something at we understand it. Ethics can develop morals and as the situation changes ethics can evolve morals.

Let us just return to ethics for now and I shall say more about the strengths and weaknesses of each in more detail further on.

Ethics is a way of reaching an answer in any situation. The aim is to reach the best answer. But all problems are complicated. The more we learn about a problem, the more complicated it becomes.

Let us take a simple example. Common morality states "Thou shall not kill another person." A drug-crazed killer has shot a dozen students in a classroom and is systematically shooting more students, one every ten seconds. You are situated behind him ten meters away. You have a gun and a clear shot at him. Do you shoot and kill him?

Morality says no.

Ethics tells us we should consider the potential outcome of our decision, how it will affect others and how it affects the world we live in. Ethics tells us to make a decision based upon what we think is right for everything and everyone.

My own take is:

  • Don't decide for your own benefit, decide for the benefit of others.
  • Do the right thing, the nicest thing.
  • Be aware of the consequences. In part they are our responsibility.
Do we kill him? There is no perfect right or wrong answer here We each must make our own decision and live with the outcomes. If we have done so, then the decision was ethical.

Based upon my understanding of the situation, I would shoot to kill because it is in the best interest of the remaining students. It may have a bad outcome for me, but I am less important than the students. I would judge more good would result from my killing him.

This is making an ethical decision.

However, maybe there is something I didn't know. Maybe it was a movie being shot and I for whatever reason, was unaware that everyone was acting. Sounds pretty stupid, but such things happen.

The Problems of Morality and Ethics

Morality provides answers. Morality provides solutions. Morals are right, absolute and certain. We can be confident that if we decide based upon morality, it is a solution and correct based upon the morality. Morals are convenient and easy. Few questions are required, thinking is limited, and we follow the rules. This is a great strength and a weakness. Morality provides good answers to many day to day decisions.

There are so many decisions we need to make each day, we cannot spend hours on each of them. This is where morality is strong. We can follow our morals with a fair degree of confidence because in the past they have provided a good outcome. Morals are convenient and easy.

But things change. How do the Ten Commandments handle the internet? Genetic engineering? Pollution? Nuclear power? Global warming? The Ten Commandments do not have an answer for these questions because the questions did not exist or were not asked at that time.

Clearly decision making must evolve to adapt to current circumstances. But morality is characterised by stability, by absolute rules. What about ethics? Ethics is the domain of changed circumstance. Ethics is fluid and adaptable.

Ethics can show us how to evolve our morals, how to make decisions in new situations.

Ethics is better for the tricky decisions, morality is more efficient for the regular problems we face day to day. But be aware, do not get complacent, morality does not question and we often need to understand and question the reasons behind even simple looking problems before making a decision. Take care using morality, ask yourself is the answer obvious or do I need to understand a little more?

Let us use a simple example. The morality "Thou shall not kill another person" seems straightforward.

Hitler was exterminating the Jews in 1939. Was it ethical to declare war on Germany? Is war moral? See above... which is right, correct or best?

Take a more complex example within the context of war. Imagine aircraft pilots shooting civilians because they looked like so called dangerous insurgents. Such decisions were made ethically in their view, they were making a decision for the best interest of other parties at some risk to themselves. In hindsight they may have been wrong, but the decision can well be called ethical. It could equally be called moral because the pilots were following the rules.

Morality is applying predetermined values (usually developed by others) and designed for different problems, different dilemmas at a different time and then not accepting the responsibility of that decision. "I did it because the rule said so." This in my view is taking the easy option, abrogating responsibility in many cases.

Ethics is applying your values to a problem now and making the best decision possible based upon the available information. Such decisions become your decision and you are responsible for the decision and outcome in part. Ethics is characterised by doubt, unanswered questions and knowing that we can only make our best decisions and that such decisions are not the best for everyone. Every decision has costs and costs are not shared equally. So ethics does not answer the question what is right or wrong, but what is possibly better or worse based upon what is known.

Moral decisions provide certainty, an amount of righteousness. But of course because each society has different morality, each society will make differing moral decisions in some cases. Sometimes this is enough to generate major conflicts despite seemingly almost insignificant differences. The fact that religion is a major factor in conflict demonstrates this. The morality of each religion is different and absolute. Absolute differences are irreconcilable, and generate intolerance.

Ethical decisions provide uncertainty and doubt. Even if societies have differing values, taking an ethical approach permits different solutions and an acceptance that perhaps my decision is not the best for all. This engenders an accepting culture, one which takes a more "live and let live" approach. Doubt is good in that is encourages tolerance.

Ethicists are wracked with doubt. Moralists are absolute in their convictions. Find a smug politician and you have found a moral politician. Find a tormented politician and you have found a more ethical politician.

I will close with another example of where today's society has a moral value which is at odds with ethical decision making.

Euthanasia. Under the same moral code that states we shall not kill, society today demands we maintain the life of aged damaged people who no longer have any desire to live. Our morality demands we keep their hearts beating, their lungs pumping, using all that modern medicine can offer. Ethics asks the question why we should maintain the life in this failing body propped up by technology. What is the good that comes from locking out the grim reaper a little longer? No one wishes to suffer and finally die ever so slowly, causing grief to their loved ones. Yet society forces this morality onto us all.

I ask you the question who gains from this? Look deep into your heart and think for a moment, think ethically. I suspect that some people gain by saying "We did all we could to keep him alive." This is a way of justifying an unethical decision. A way of avoiding criticism and blame. Being ethical is accepting the consequences for making the best decisions.

Remember morality is about abrogating responsibility? The dying person makes their decision and wishes to die. For our own selfish reasons, not for their benefit, someone else decides they must continue to suffer and others must suffer so they can be moral.

Euthanasia is ethical in the vast majority of cases, but it is immoral in most societies today. Politicians are largely being unethical by allowing this to continue. They are acting in their self interest - their ego removes their ethical component from their actions.

So, I hope you now understand the difference between morals and ethics. It won't change the world tomorrow, nor should it, but if perhaps you can just take a little more time to consider important decisions in ethical terms in future then your world will be a better, more tolerant place.

If you want to practice straight away, ask yourself what are the ethical questions associated with smoking, with parenting and junk food, computer games or boxing. What about walking across the road safely on a Don't Walk sign, forcing children to attend classes where they are disruptive in class, smoking a cigarette, working for an alcohol or uranium mining company. What are the ethics of working for a lobby group, being a politician or a vegetarian?

And recall again, there is no absolutely right or wrong answer. There are better or worse answers, yes. But not right or wrong. The best you can do is better understand the issues, the consequences, and who and what is affected before deciding. You cannot make a truly ethically decision until you are on the spot. And each ethical decision will not be perfect nor please everyone, nor will it be valid forever, the answer may change tomorrow, but such decisions will be yours and the best you can make at the time with the information you have.

Remember:

  • Don't decide for your own benefit, decide for the benefit of others.
  • Do the right thing, the nicest thing.
  • Be aware of the consequences. In part they are our responsibility.
Being ethical is tough, very tough. But I know of no better way to make mydecisions. Do you know a better way to make your decisions?

The Withdrawal Effects of Alcoholism

The Withdrawal Effects of Alcoholism
By Stephanie Loebs

For somebody suffering from alcoholism, the decision to enter a rehabilitation program can be a difficult yet ultimately rewarding one. It takes courage and self-awareness to acknowledge there is a problem, and with the support of good physicians, a sound recovery program, and the love of family and friends can an addict learn to overcome this illness.

Recovery from alcoholism may differ from patient to patient. While a reputable drug rehab center will work to offer the most painless detox process possible, there remains the possibility of withdrawal symptoms. Sudden abstinence from a substance frequently used can effect the body in various ways, as the dependence on alcohol has caused the body to react a certain way for a long time. Change, while eventually will work for the better, can be painful for some.

For the recovering alcoholic, various withdrawal symptoms may include:

  • Nervousness or skittish behavior
  • Anxiety and/or irritability
  • Depression and/or fatigue
  • Insomnia and/or nightmares
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Headaches and/or heart palpitations
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever and/sweating
  • Hallucinations

If you or somebody you love suffers from a dependency on alcoholic, it is important to consult with a physician or counselor with regards to treatment. While some may believe swift abstinence, or going "cold turkey," is the answer, this may actually affect the addict for the worse and inhibit proper treatment. Safe, effective detoxification in a drug treatment center, supervised by professionals in the field, can offer a more dedicated opportunity of recovery. What is important is that you do not wait to seek treatment, but act as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the mind and body.

Stephanie Loebs is the executive director of Williamsburg Place, one of the top drug rehab clinics in the nation. Williamsburg Place aids those who suffer from drug and/or alcohol addiction, and specializes in caring for health care professionals. For over twenty years Williamsburg Place and its joint rehabilitation center, the William J. Farley Center, have helped thousands of people from all walks of life take back their lives and overcome substance abuse.

Wake Up, America!: This Isn't Normal

By Richard Brody

Whether one agrees, or disagrees, with the politics, perspectives, opinions, point - of - view, or rhetoric, we are witnessing today, there should be, agreement, we're observing conditions, etc, which, we have not observed, in America, in recent memory! It may be world - conditions, the threat of terrorism, hatred, bigotry, prejudice, or other factors (including greed, and personal/ political agendas, and self - interest), but, there appears to be, little, to no attempt, to seek any common ground, meeting - of - the - minds, or bipartisan efforts! Our present President, often seems, to focus on slogans, and being popular with his base, core supporters, rather than all Americans. Several months ago, President Barack Obama, during a partisan, political speech, said, This isn't normal, and to this writer, that analysis seemed, not only accurate, but indicates, the potential threat, to our way of life!

1. The late comedian, George Carlin, after the atrocities, which occurred on September 11, 2001, warned of the potential dangers, of going too far, in reacting to these terrorist attacks, and, thus, abandoning, our commitment to protecting all our American freedoms. He proclaimed, if we do that, then, The terrorists win, because they would have achieved one of their primary objectives, of disrupting, and changing our mindsets. We must avoid taking the populist, simplistic, approaches, and pursue, well - considered, relevant, sustainable solutions, which simultaneously, make us safe, while being careful, to also, protect, all our freedoms, to all our citizens.

2. Regardless of one's opinion of President Donald J Trump, one should, and must recognize, he is a master at inspiring and motivating, those who feel, either neglected, oppressed, or resentful, by using rhetoric, which often, goes further, than merely, bordering on, vitriol! If we don't protect all of our freedoms, including those stated in the Constitution, or which, have become an essential component and expectation, we will eventually, begin to become unrecognizable, etc. What ever happened, to civility, and any attempt at compromise, bipartisan cooperation, and serving/ protecting all freedoms, instead of merely those, which are self - serving, etc?

3. The United States appears to be, more divided, than at any time, in recent memory. It seems to be, far beyond policy and/ or political differences, but, rather, an essential battle for the core, vision, and what America will stand for, and represent!

4. Traditionally, we have been the leaders of the free world, defending freedoms, etc, and human rights. Mr. Trump has referred to himself, as a Nationalist, which brings negative connotations, to many. He has often contradicted himself, and made it, more about dollars, and cents, than common sense, ethics and morality!

This isn't normal, because we are the United States of America, and we are being divided and polarized, rather than unified! Wake up, America, before it's too late! We've seen this before!

Why Do Some People Stay In Touch With Their Ex

By Oliver JR Cooper

If one's relationship has just come to an end, they could decide to cut their ties and to move on with their life. As a result of this, they are not going to want to stay in touch with their ex.

One Step Back

Doing so could be seen as something that will stop them from being able to put the past firmly behind them. And, if one didn't really get on with the other person or if they simply grew apart, this is going to make perfect sense.

In this case, staying in touch would be similar to keeping a car that no longer works - it wouldn't make sense. Their time with the other person has come to an end and it will be in their best interest to let go.

A New Beginning

Now that their relationship has come to end, they can focus more of their energy and attention on other areas of their life. They may decide that they want to spend some time in their own company.

Through doing this, it will give them the opportunity to get back in touch with who they are. Alternatively, one might not need to do this, as they might already be only too aware of what their needs are.

External Feedback

The people in their life could understand why they no longer want to speak to the person they were with. If one wasn't in a relationship that was very healthy, they might be relieved that one is taking this approach.

They would have seen the amount of damage that this was doing to them, and they might have even encouraged them to walk away before. But even if their relationship wasn't unhealthy, they could still support their decision.

A Pattern

If one was to look back on their life, they may find that this is how they have always behaved. So, no matter what their relationships were like in the past, their behaviour would have been the same.

Then again, one might have held on in the past and came to see that this was not doing them any favours. Their change in behaviour will be the result of an experience or a number of experiences that had a big impact on them.

A Different Approach

But for every person who behaves in this way, there are going to be plenty of others who don't. When one can relate to this, they are not be able to just walk away; they will need to stay in touch with their ex.

Therefore, once one is no longer in a relationship with someone, they will still be part of their life. One is then not going to want to be too close to them, but they won't want them to be too far away either.

Two Experiences

If one was in a relationship that wasn't dysfunctional, it could be said that this kind of behaviour makes sense. But if they didn't get on, it can be a lot harder to comprehend what is going on.

When it comes to the former, they will probably respect each other and there will be all the positive experiences that they had together, and they might have mutual friends. Yet, when it comes to the latter, there is unlikely to be any respect between them and there will be all the negative experiences that they have shared.

One Factor

What one could find is that staying in touch with their ex makes it easier for them to handle how they feel. This person, as well as their others exes, could provide them with the support that they need to make up for their inner instability.

If they were with someone who was abusive, being this way is going to make it harder for them to cut their ties with someone who is not good for them. Their inner instability will cause them to hold on and it would have been one of the reasons why they ended up with someone like this to begin with.

Another Factor

One's emotions are going to be out of control and this will make it harder for them to be able to control their behaviour. But while someone who stays in touch with their ex could be emotionally out of control, they could also be emotionally dead.

When this takes place, it is not going to be a way for them to settle themselves down; it will be a way for them to gain resources. Having their ex in their life can allow them to have sex, gain money and receive other benefits.

Two Extremes

The person in the first example probably won't find it hard to empathise; whereas the person in the second example probably will. Empathy is vital when it comes to being able to treat other people as separate human beings, as opposed to objects that are there to be used.

Ergo, when one sees another person as an object that exists to fulfil their needs, it is going to be a challenge for them to realise that this person also has feelings and needs. And, if they were to get to a point where they no longer need them, they could discard them.

Awareness

If someone does use people, it is unlikely that they would feel the need to change their behaviour. On the other hand, if one feels emotionally unstable, they might look into what they can do to settle themselves down.

With that said, if someone can see that they stay in touch with their ex (or ex's) for the wrong reason, it might be a good idea for them to reach out for external support. This can be provided by the assistance of a therapist or a healer.

Fighting the Incivility Virus

By Frank Pray

Civility may not open a mind, but incivility will close it. Most of our communication is goal oriented: We want something. That goal might be a vote, a kiss, a job, a better deal, admiration, or information to make a decision. Unless our message is received, it will not affect a change of mind or heart. So, there is a practical reason to be civil in a debate or argument: it means we will improve our chances of getting what we want.
Incivility also closes the mind of the one who is being uncivil. Incivility rests on the premise that the other party is too stupid, ignorant, evil, or thoughtless to grasp the truth. This extreme labeling closes your mind that the other person's view may have some have some valid points. Usually, neither party in a debate or argument has all the information, skill, wisdom, or good judgment to be 100% correct. An insult closes the door on any data that could correct an error in your understanding.
Incivility can also close the door to compromise. Incivility is a wrong long remembered. Anger with a person who has insulted you will mean that it is much less likely you will cooperate with that person to reach a "win-win" outcome in a negotiation.
Incivility also breeds an "us vs. them" mentality. We see ourselves in exaggerated self-esteem as good, but view the opponent as evil. Political, cultural, and religious polarization results.
Washington politics reflects the discord generally in the country. Incivility encourages distrust that any good resides in opposing views. One party in Congress goes forward with legislation with no input from the opposing party. After all, there can be no compromise with the devil.
But civility is not just being nice or conceding to an opposing view to keep the peace. Civility is flexible on minor or moderate differences but does not bend on core principles. Ethical advocates advance even core principles by compromise, knowing that not to negotiate may mean no gains at all, and maybe losses.
Here are some ideas for maintaining civility in the face of fierce disagreement on matters you care about:
1. Find some point in the debate on which you can agree. Look for common ground, and state the points of agreement first. Re-stating the other party's argument conveys you are listening, and able to take a different perspective.
2. Acknowledge in the discussion that you can understand how the opponent could view things as she does, but that you believe that viewpoint has some weaknesses. Unsurprisingly, this approach works better than calling the other person a blockhead.
3. Avoid words like "always," "never," "clearly," "undoubtedly," and "without question." Try fewer black and white characterizations, such as "sometimes," "often," "generally," "perhaps," "maybe," or "it seems," or "it appears."
4. Where possible and truthful, find a way to compliment your opponent about the way she has presented her case.
5. Before launching into a statement of the facts and argument, summarize to your opponent the key points you have heard him make, and ask if that is a fair summation. This exercise will reduce your opponent's anxiety or skepticism about whether you are listening.
6. Stick to the issues and evidence. Avoid attacks on the personality or underhanded tactics of the opponent. But, if there is an outright lie or breach of trust, call it out in clear but non-belligerent terms.
7. Turning the other cheek doesn't mean you become a punching bag. But pick which attacks merit counterattack. Often an opponent is baiting you, getting "inside your head" to get you emotionally reactive, and therefore off point. Being civil can convey you're not so easily distracted from the goal.
8. See that your opponent's incivility exposes a weakness. If the evidence and argument were convincing, there wouldn't be a need to attack you personally. Probe for gaps in reasoning or proof, and focus on those instead of vengeance. That weakness might be a lack of knowledge, an effort to cover up a past embarrassing history, a lack of confidence in himself or his case, or a warped conviction that hostility is the only way to win. You can use that weakness to your advantage if the opponent refuses to compromise.
9. If other approaches fail, confront the bully directly by declaring calmly but firmly: "enough." State the consequences of continued incivility. Report the bully, or if it is an option, refuse to further engage with the bully. Walk away from the deal.
10. Surround yourself with supportive friends and colleagues. Most people practice basic politeness and courtesy. Friends can bring balance and perspective. If possible, find a way to laugh at the some of your opponent's more outrageous incivilities
In conclusion, incivility is a corrosive practice that polarizes people. Incivility closes our minds to see the merits of an opposing viewpoint. Incivility also diverts focus from the issues and evidence. Incivility causes a breakdown in progress as people are unable to reach a compromise. However, the answer is to respond without counterattack. Stay focused on the issues and best factual arguments. The ultimate victory is the satisfaction of making the better case on the evidence.

Letting Go Of Doubts In A Relationship By Looking Deep Within Yourself

Letting Go Of Doubts In A Relationship By Looking Deep Within Yourself

Letting Go Of Doubts In A Relationship By Looking Deep Within Yourself
By James Nussbaumer

The world likes to teach us that having doubts is a signal that something is not right with this situation. Or, if it is relationship doubts then you should be cautious and not rush to falling in love or getting married.

Even on television news or movie drama, we see that having doubts should mean that possibly someone is "up to no good" and doesn't deserve our attention.

Hardly do we see that having doubts is a sign pointing us to look deeper within ourselves.

In a set of previous articles (which I've linked to one another) I discussed the woman from Croatia, named Nakita, writing to me in an Ohio prison inviting me to participate in a worldwide mindfulness meditation for world peace, to be held on December 22, 2010, at 9:30 PM.

I would participate from my bunk in the often violent din of the cell block. I must say I was certainly having doubts about the validity of this event, a scam or a sort of prank, I 'd think.

I tossed around the idea of my relationship doubts with this woman, since I 'd never even met her ever before, she writes me out of the blue, and "I'm supposed to trust her," were more haunting thoughts.

I wondered, "Was it really the new relationship with Nakita I was having doubts over?"

Or was it something else?

That was until I heard some words in a conversation from other inmates that I 'd taken as a signal from the universe, or, we may say the Holy Spirit, that this indeed must be a real live event.

Why was I making judgments and having my doubts?

Even with these good-minded thoughts and the alert signal from the Holy Spirit, or, Karma, as I 'd mentioned in a previous article, I again regressed to vigilant questioning in my mind and having doubts.

This time it was over the time zones around the world.

Why had Nakita scheduled this "meeting of minds" for 9:30 PM Eastern time, which was very convenient for me?

Again, positive right-minded thinking entered my mind, suggesting that maybe Nakita was not the organizer of this event. It was very possible it could have been arranged by, say, an individual or group in the Far East, or even Australia.

She never said she was the originator, so why was I hanging onto that notion?

My having doubts turned more toward trust when it dawned on me like bright rays of sunlight bursting through cloud cover: Why should I be so concerned about all of this anyway? It really didn't matter who the organizer was, or what time it occurred.

Feelings of inner peace

With that one lasting peaceful thought I remembered a lesson from A Course in Miracles teaching that, "Time was only real in the Holy Spirit's use of it," and He was using it for this event.

I was urged by myself to simply let go of having doubts and any negative-minded attempts to intrude on my thought process about this mindfulness meditation event, and I proceeded to set my sights on the inner peace I was feeling in general about the whole idea.

Any wrong-minded thoughts or having doubts from the ego would only block the extension of the thoughts from others, regardless of how many minds were involved in this mindfulness meditation.

It would block my joy as well, which was really most important here for me to consider. Another thought hit me that if my own joy were to be blocked, then I would perceive myself as being unfulfilled.

I went on to perceive this to be a necessary excitement for myself, there, deep in the rabbit hole of prison, one that would give me a sense of accomplishment and completion, and most of all, wholeness.

What accomplishment do I mean?

I'll let you answer that for yourself, while you contemplate the following passage from A Course in Miracles:

" Spirit knows that the awareness of all its brothers is included in its own, as it is included in God. The power of the whole Sonship and Its Creator is therefore spirit's own fullness, rendering its creations equally whole, and equal in perfection. The ego can not prevail against a totality that includes God, and any totality must include God."

We all seem to be cautious when having fears and doubts, but the most wonderful associations we have with one another are in being honest enough to share our feelings.

How Do We Know If We Can Trust Someone?

By Kathleen Dwyer Blair

Many of us trust too easily only to discover that we were betrayed. Others of us don't trust at all. Trusting too quickly, or not trusting at all, usually says more about us than about the other person. Trust is not something that we want to automatically do when we meet someone. We also don't want to automatically mistrust someone either. Some of us experience an involuntary response to trust, or not to trust, and neither one of these extremes serve us well.

Trust is something that takes time. It's a process.

Trust is a process

When I say, trust is a process, it means that it takes time to get to know someone. If we enter a relationship at a slow and steady pace, we will discover more about who the other person's true self. We can then determine whether they can be trusted with our feelings, and our shared personal information, because our trust is the greatest gift we can give someone.

Finding the Balance

Some of us were betrayed early in life, and we don't trust easily because of that. Others so desperately want to be in a relationship, or a friendship, that we rush to trust someone to make that happen. We don't give ourselves the opportunity, and time, to get to know that person to determine if they are trustworthy, or not.

In adulthood, often not being able to trust a friend, or a potential romantic partner, may be because we have been betrayed in our childhood, adolescence, or at some time as an adult. The person desiring our trust may very well be trustworthy, however we may not be able to recognize this due to our history.

Our Past Relationships Reflected in The Present

One of the first big tasks of our lives is establishing trust versus mistrust. As a child, we develop a sense that our needs will be met, versus a sense that they won't. Our view of the world is often determined by how secure we feel that we can rely on others for our expectations to be met. If we have had good, consistent relationships in the past, we may assume as much from our current and future relationships, and trust too easily based upon this experience.

If our parents, or our experiences in past relationships, were inconsistent in meeting our needs, we may fear current and future relationships will respond the same way. We make ourselves vulnerable when we trust. Withholding our trust may be used as self-preservation to protect us from being hurt again. How can I trust myself from past mistakes?

It's Not You, It's Me

Sometimes it is challenging to differentiate to determine if we are not feeling trustworthy of someone else. Is it about them? Or is it about our own history? So many times, I have heard during psychotherapy sessions that, "My friend is talking about other people and I'm uncomfortable. I don't know if I ought to trust them or not."

Global Drought

By Dr. Tim G Williams

Webster defined drought as a period of below-average precipitation in a given region, resulting in prolonged shortages in its water supply, whether atmospheric, surface water or ground water. A drought can last for months, years, or may even last for decades. The world today is faced with the fact that many countries around the world have squandered their natural resource of fresh water to the point that very critical shortages are already occurring. What is amazing though is that the Earth provides all living things with abundant amounts of rainfall and snow to survive. The logistics of fresh water transport to areas that are faced with dire shortages is hampered by monetary constraints that always thwart those areas from receiving relief form their water shortages.

Whether it is greed, the inhumanity of man or just plain ignorance are the main reasons why millions of people are now facing acute shortages of fresh clean water. It is very apparent to see that abundant fresh available water is the first primary requirement for any and all other projects. Without abundant available fresh water any future development whether it's new construction for homes or businesses or for agriculture will end up in failure. What is a major factor of the contributor to global water shortages is due to mans gluttony of the consumption of fossil fuels for the past 100 years. Our insistence on relying on fossil fuels has intensified Global warming to the point to where we are facing a global catastrophe of epic proportions. This disaster is happening right now in areas in the Mid East and will spread through-out the world if we fail to utilize the technologies that are now available to usher in an age of progress to eliminate the enormous consumption of fossil fuel sources. We also have to coordinate global initiatives to end drought conditions that are already occurring around the world.

In Egypt due to the lack of sufficient infrastructure to trap rain run offs the recent days of heavy rain and subsequent flooding swept tons of soil and other containments into the Nile. The Nile is the main fresh water supplier for all of Egypt now has been deluged with slit and sewage forcing the closures of practically all of their water treatment centers. This is just a sample of the monumental task of securing abundant fresh water for Egypt. The situation is dire for other Mid Eastern countries as well. The availability of potable freshwater has made the prices skyrocket to the point that millions still suffer because they cannot afford the rising costs now associated with procuring fresh water from all around the region.

The United States is not immune to the lack of fresh clean water either. Flint Michigan is a typical example of man's carelessness in not providing fresh water to the people of Flint, Michigan. Coastal regions like Florida also have inadequate measures in place to provide fresh water for the growing population. Due the vulnerability of the Southeast to tropical storms and hurricanes the infrastructure in place to trap rain and storm runoffs is woefully inadequate. And, what ever rain falls the rain run off goes right into the Atlantic or into the Gulf of Mexico. All across the United States people are facing fresh water shortages, rising costs, and even worse have their water shut off just because they can't pay their water bill. With so much emphasis on the recent Dakota oil pipe line where so much media attention is focused we should be really focusing on water transport instead of oil. Man can live quite well without oil but cannot live very long without fresh water.

We should remember that before modern times the Incas were able to sustain their culture above the rain line by collecting dew and channeling it to cisterns for later distribution. Historical records indicate the use of water-collecting fog fences. These traditional methods have usually been completely passive, requiring no external energy source other than naturally occurring temperatures. And, if ancient Rome can build aqueducts to supply Rome with more than enough fresh water just think what man can build today using our available technologies. We have already developed water technologies far superior to what the Incas deployed. There should be no reason why anyone anywhere around the world should have to suffer because of the lack of available fresh water. And yet wars are continually being fought for water rights. Today, the rising costs associated with the lack of potable fresh water have put mankind on the very brink of a catastrophe that if not immediately addressed will add to the deployment of a disaster of epic proportions that will soon explode on a global scale.

Yet, it continues to be the greed of man whether it is for corporate profits, political gain, or the power to control populations the available technologies that would greatly reduce the global tensions because of the lack of fresh available potable water are kept from ever reaching the areas that benefit the most. When you have water companies using free solar energy to harness enough fresh water right form the atmosphere but purposely keep that technology cost prohibitive only further exasperates water shortages. The need is imperative that to defuse a ticking time bomb due to the lack of fresh potable water these technologies must be made available to areas and countries that are most at risk of suffering due to the lack of fresh water. In the end water companies will become more profitable and global suffering of populations will ease. All because now they will have available fresh water without having to fight for water rights.

Husband And Wife Business Partnership: Good Idea Or Bad Idea?

By Sohaib Azam, Esq

Partnerships in business are always a tough thing to consider because of the many caveats associated with a partnership. A husband and wife partnership is another such type of partnership to consider. This article will look at a few factors which one should look at before deciding on this type of business.

#1: Issue Of Trust And Cooperation

Even in a marriage, trust will always remain an issue. In the context of business, trust between all individuals is key. The husband and wife must be able to understand each other and understand that the other person is not trying to do things behind the other's back. This might include using business expenses for personal things or making an important business decision without talking to the other person. Both spouses must make sure that they can trust one another and that one will not make major unilateral decisions without talking to the other person.

Cooperation is just as important in a husband-wife partnership. Both individuals need to be able to come to an agreement on major business decisions such as how to use expenses and whether to adopt a new product or service. While it is not always important for both parties to agree 100 percent on every issue, there has to be a solid mutual understanding on the part of both parties with regard to the decisions made. Without cooperation, trust becomes a major issue when running the business.

#2: If The Couple Gets A Divorce Or Becomes Separated, What Happens?

It's always one of the biggest, but unfortunate, possibilities that a couple will decide to either separate or get a divorce. This not only causes great strain between the husband and wife, but also on their ability to run the business as a team. Depending on the nature of the separation or divorce, one person may have to give up their stake in the business, but this may not be easy to agree to.

Anytime there is a falling out between partners, the partnership and its operation become more difficult. This is even more problematic when a married couple falls out because of the difficulties involved in separating and/or getting a divorce as well as the impact it will have on the business. Both individuals will need to come to an agreement as to how to operate the partnership should either of these situations happen.

A Leadership Necessity: Maintain Integrity, But Know When To Compromise

By Richard Brody

Some individuals serving in positions of leadership, seem to feel, a leader must never compromise, while others appear ready to do so, without hesitation! After four decades of identifying, qualifying, developing, training and consulting, to over a thousand real and/ or potential leaders, I've come to believe that this concept, is often one of the most challenging to grasp, understand, and come to terms with! It is, indeed, necessary, for anyone wanting to be a successful leader, to understand when COMPROMISE is appropriate, and called for, and when it is merely a form of copping out, and taking a somewhat expedient, unprincipled course. How can someone come to a meeting of the minds, for the common good, seeking alternatives, etc, while maintaining one's commitment to maintain his absolute integrity, and still effectively listen to others, so as to achieve priorities and objectives, while still comforting and reassuring others?

1. Cooperate; create; correct: How do you determine, for a certainty, that your approach is the correct one, or the best alternative? Isn't there a possibility, most of the major objectives, goals, priorities and concerns, can be addressed in some sort of alternative strategy? Are you willing to focus on cooperative solutions and approaches, rather than adversarial ones? There is often a fine line between doing the right thing and sticking to one's principles, and coming to a compromise, in order to be pragmatic, and get something, of significance, done! Leading should be about creating something which serves the group and stakeholders, and not about My way or the highway!

2. Options: Are you certain there is no other option/ alternative, which might achieve most of the goals and objectives you seek? Isn't it better to compromise, from strength and logic, so that your idealism, is combined with being practical and achievable, by utilizing the proper degree of pragmatism?

3. Meanings: What is the central theme, or meaning, of your idea or plan? How will you articulate it, so that others, will buy into your vision, and adopt it (or, at least most of it), as their own?

4. Priorities; plans: Focus on the priorities, rather than merely rigidly adhering to your plan (known as Plan A)! Examine alternatives, in relation, to what you want to achieve and accomplish!

5. Relevant; rational; rationale; relate: Why might it be that others have difficulties accepting your approach? How can you help them to better relate to it, and feel it's both relevant and rational? Will you clearly explain and articulate your rationale?

6. Opportunities; opinions: Often, the major, defining difference between a great leader, and a wannabe, is understanding the need to prepare for opportunities, as well as create his own! Facts and opinions often vary, and a real leader must be ready, willing and able to distinguish between them!

7. Musts; methods: In every plan, leaders should differentiate between the musts and the wants! He must be willing to use the best methods available, and to evolve, as well as adapt, if necessary and called for.

8. Ideas; ideology; integrity; improve: Get to the crux of the matter, and don't sweat the petty stuff! Articulate your central ideas and ideology, maintain absolute integrity, and focus on improving!

9. Strength; sustainable system: A great leader becomes stronger by strengthening everyone around him! View everything in terms of the present needs, as well as intermediate and long - term sustainability!

10. Examine; evolve: Examine as many relevant factors and alternatives as possible, so you might tweak your plan, and create a meeting of the minds. When one compromises to achieve, without sacrificing the mission and purpose, he has properly done so! To compromise merely to get along, is not leadership! Evolve and understand that while it's nice to be idealistic, unless you achieve, it is merely symbolic! There is a time for pragmatic idealism!

The famous song tells us there is a time to hold them, and to fold them! Maintain absolute integrity, but know when, and how to COMPROMISE effectively!

Empowering Yourself: What You Can Do About Mass Shootings

By Dr. Linda Sapadin

The San Bernardino killings occurred on December 9th, just 9 weeks after the Oregon student shootings. Will I be surprised if another mass shooting erupts between my writing this article and its publication? Not at all. For mass shootings have now become part of the American landscape.

We feel not only horrified but helpless too. What can we do to prevent these kinds of tragedies? We keep calling for better mental health services and, at least, a modicum of gun control. Such actions would help. But they are political issues that won't change overnight. They require altering attitudes, spending mucho money and creating nationwide systems to implement the changes.

So, is there anything that can be done right now to help prevent, or, at least, lower the frequency of, mass shootings?

Yes, there is. And the answer is solidly backed by psychological research. We need to demand that the media report these types of shootings in a non-sensational way. When they don't, they make the shooter a media star. This is what many of these disturbed minds want.

Perhaps the most poignant example of this is the shooting at Roseburg, Oregon. When Sheriff John Hanlin announced the details of the shooting, he said "I will not name the shooter... I will not give him the credit he probably sought prior to this horrific and cowardly act."

It wasn't long, however, before a CNN anchor took a different approach, bragging, "We do know his name and we are reporting it. His name is (xxxx)... He listed himself as (xxxx blog name). In his blog, he wrote, 'When they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are... Seems the more people you kill, the more you're in the limelight.'"

The Oregon shooter was right about being in the limelight. The names of the killers of JFK, RFK, and Lennon now live in infamy. By committing a heinous act, they raised their status from "nobody" to "somebody." Recent killings have gravitated from assassinating high-level people to committing mass murder. Fashion is fickle... even when it's deciding your style of murder.

These new killings are generally perpetrated by a person who is alienated, angry, and feels like a "nobody." What does he do with those powerful feelings? He sits on them - for a period of time. Then, he takes action. The form of the action is shaped more by what's outside of him then what's inside. That is, he decides what action to take by copy-catting others. As he watches the media sensationalize shootings, he discovers his path to fame. Simply pull the trigger and be "somebody."

So what should the media do? Stop reporting these shootings? Of course not. The media needs to do its job. It needs to cover the news but it doesn't need to sensationalize the event. News media can practice, as we all must, restraint.

But these are sensational stories. What's the press doing wrong?

They are hyping the story, not reporting it. What's the difference? Let me paraphrase Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart who when describing his threshold test for pornography said, "I know it when I see it."

Hyped reporting is when the story is repeated ad nauseum, spiced up with interviews from grieving relatives, shocked bystanders, even children on site.

Hyped reporting is when dramatic footage is shown over and over again, along with grisly photos and any other tidbits of information that stir our emotions.

Hyped reporting is when the goal is to hook the audience by revving up their emotions so that the buzz does not quickly die down.

But aren't we, the listener, to blame too? After all, we are the end consumer, gobbling up these news stories, pictures and videos like juicy junk food? Of course, we have a role in this. Though we are not creating the hype, we are consuming it. But if we are smart, we will demand that reporting on this epidemic of mass murders be done in a completely different way.

What if the media set a policy of strict blackouts on publicity for these killers? No names, no photos, no identifying information, no interviews with family members, neighbors, teachers etc. Do you think this would diminish the frequency of such attacks? I do. And my opinion is backed by psychological science, which has documented that media coverage is contagious. This is true for mass shootings and for suicides.

If you agree with me, get active. An immediate step you could take is to contact media sources you watch, listen to or read. Ask them to go along with this blackout. Tell them not to wait till the next mass murder. Do it now. Then ask your social media friends to do the same.

Then, an additional step you can take is to contact your legislators. Ask them to create laws which make such blackouts mandatory. Is this squashing freedom of the press? No, it is squashing freedom of the mass murderers. Anybody against that?

© 2016

If you'd like to empower yourself to do something about frequent, frightening mass shootings, take action. Contact the media that you listen to, read and watch. Demand that they create a blackout policy for mass murderers. No names mentioned. No 15 minutes of fame for these deranged people. Spread the work via social media. It's time for all of us to get active."The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good me to do nothing," Edmund Burke.

Message From the Universe: Have Fun While Walking Your Path Towards Success!

By Daniel A Amzallag

"Do you know why koala bears are so cute? Why ospreys dance in flight? Why cheetahs run so fast? Arctic terns fly so far? Flowers smell so good? Blueberries taste so blue?

Butterflies flit? Parrots talk? Whales sing? And doves coo?

Because I was having fun... which is my greatest wish for you in all you do.

You can,
The Universe"

You really have two choices here. You either work hard and play hard until something amazing happens, and if it doesn't, no big deal because you had fun while venturing out into the unknown. Or only work hard and harder but still not get to your destination of a wealthy life. The only issue here is that you didn't have much fun along the way. Probably, while working harder and not smarter, you missed celebrations, birthday parties, weddings, maybe a funeral or two, to unfortunately end up not getting what you worked and hoped for so much. You sacrificed so much along the way and forgot who you are as a person. You didn't enjoy the journey because you focused too much on the destination, which probably isn't the same one you desperately worked for. Maybe the Universe has something else in store for you, and maybe a better opportunity will come along. Anything is possible, especially when you have great work ethics. However, during that moment of despair and discouragement, you are asking yourself: "What do I have to show for?", or "Was this sacrifice really all worth it?". This is when anger and lost of hope kicks in. You tend to forget the real reason why you got into being an entrepreneur, and the freedom you have to enjoy life while working towards your goals. Your reasons have now a complete different meaning and it is important that you get back into understanding the WHY'S you are doing all this for.

Some people will succeed, and others will fail. It's a given. Some have good luck, and others are just not getting it. Regardless of how hard you work, you will not see the results you been wishing for. You will be dealing with the heartaches, frustrations, insecurity feelings, loneliness, desperation if you allow the negative thoughts entering into your mind. You will need to change your perspective so you can reboot your mind and erase these feelings of despair. More you allow them to circulate into your subconscious mind, more harm they will do to your psyche. Forget the failures. forget the anguish, forget the disappointments, as they already occurred. You mourned your failure, now its time to move on. Take a deep breathe, make sure you learned from your mistakes, and go back to what you do best: Live your life and have fun.

Everything About Drones

By Dyna Smith

At times, you might have encountered a bouncing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle hovering in the aerospace swaying to and fro, left and ride and what not! The researchers may still identify the device but the people totally unaware might have an extremely agile pulse accelerating curio as to what the gadget is and how does it work. Let us introduce you to Drones!
What is a Drone?
An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle also called as a drone is a battery-powered gadget which is designed to fly through a remote controller. The device can hover; flight high and far as per the limitations of the range. Also a drone is capable of clicking pictures, generating mesmerizing aerial videos and a lot more!
Military personnel named them as UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) or RPAS (subsets of Unmanned Aircraft Systems) i.e. Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems. Though they are primarily used in military services, still the emergence of drones for recreational and commercial purposes is a landmark. They have successfully presented themselves as a utility device which may be used for a variety of agendas.
Drone-producing companies have Parrot, DJI and similar ones at the top who are all committed to manufacture these robotic toys lasting in vast variety of pricing categories. The prices may differ from a few dollars to thousands of dollar as per your choice. However it is advised to be a pro on a budgeted one before investing grand bucks.
Drone History
The inchoation of drones began in early 1900s and was originally planned to be restricted to military usage and none others. Later, an agency named CIA initiated the usage in 2002 during a military operation held somewhere in Afghanistan.
Nevertheless the circumscriptions somehow widened with time and the acceptance stretched to commercial and even recreational concepts.
The 4-rotor design to these quad copters enhances its reliability. As of 2012, USAF has put to use a number of 7494 UAVs. Also 50 countries in the world are reported to be active drone users. The commercial usage of the drones marks USA as the leading enthusiast. There have also been certain development measures and countermeasures incorporated by FAA for the use of drones in commercial aspects.
The progressive decline of manufacturing cost of the drones has allowed the manufacturers to lower the prices and make it quite affordable for the users.
Henceforth, drones have also fascinated media and news houses to use them for optimum purposes.
Conclusion
UAVs are the all new trend-setters that tend to administer the techno-era by eliminating complexities. Despite of the regulations as prescribed by FAA, the statistics of the drone using hobbyists have agreeably increased. In fact, the hobbyists, commercial users have popularized it to the extent where all age groups are into the deed of buying one, nurturing their passion of aerial photography and enjoying the pleasing experience of flying drones.

Americans And The Addiction To Doom (Presidential Campaign)

By Matthew J Steadman

With primary results just coming in from the second largest "Super Tuesday" of the 2016 election season, we saw an almost sweep by Donald Trump. John Kasich won his first primary of the election season in Ohio, his home state.

Watching the television screen as each poll closed, and final results showed Donald Trump had won overall. Even booting Sen. Marco Rubio out of his home state of Florida. My wife turned to me after MSNBC panned out to show four squares with Trump's face, declaring him the winner in North Carolina, Illinois, Missouri, and Florida. "Who... Who is voting for him?" As I began to quip back, "Stupid people," I stopped and thought. Delved into what all I had seen on the debate stages, the words that were said, and the messages that people get depending on which debate they watch. I finally responded, "People run by a fear that is false."

I am proud to say I have watched every single GOP and Democrat debate. And the tones that you hear from each stage is so starkly different. One resounding "fact" you perpetually hear from the GOP stage is that of, "The Obama administration's failure over the last eight years." It almost gets repeated so much it is annoying. But, I also listen to Conservative Talk Radio, FOX News, and get inputs from many different facets. And one thing I hear repeatedly is that of our "President's failure,"The destruction of our country the last eight years," ObamaCare has ruined our health care system," and so on. But, do you notice, they use these overarching statements but never delve into the logistics of their claims. Is it fear mongering? Well, yes.

One thing to be clear about is this: The numbers I use as reported by the United States government agencies, would be the same numbers a Republican as would a Democratic president would be judged on. I often hear when a statistic is given that, "Well that isn't including (Blank)." Well, okay you have a statistical point. But, we can't negate it because if a Republican were in office the same numbers from the same agencies would be used, and have been, for many years.

In 2008, President Obama was sworn in as president and took over a very depleted country. We were losing 750,000 jobs per month in the private sector, and our stock market was shaky. Finally, the shuffling of bad bank investments by the "Big Banks," led to a collapse of the Stock Market that would have been not only the biggest in history but was also set to cause a "Global Stock Market Collapse." In essence, the hundreds of thousands of "Bad Mortgages," had grown to such a large number that when our economy and market fell, it was so intertwined in the Global Market that it would bring down every other Stock Exchange in the world. We boo-booed, and bad. President Obama put forth the Stimulus Package, which was voted on in the Senate and Congress and passed. Were this to not have taken place, our country could have gone into a depression 2X-3X worse than that of the Great Depression of 1929 (25% Unemployment - 1929-1939).

Along with losing jobs, our unemployment rate was skyrocketing. It began rising the last three years of President George W. Bush's presidency, peaked in 2009 at 10.8%, and as of March 2016 is at a steady 4.9%. Indeed, these numbers are not perfect, and there could be the discrepancy, but these are the same numbers all presidents of the modern age have been judged.

In 2009, the United States GDP was at a -2.6, and as of March 2016, we are at a steady 2.3. And we can see this through our stock market which is at the highest point in history.

On the issue of health care, we had a system that was working... for those who had health care. But, corporate greed was lashing out, and people were being denied health insurance for many reasons including having "Pre-existing Conditions," which included cancer and mental health. They only wanted healthy people, because those people pay in, but rarely call upon the insurance to do what it is supposed to do, pay out. We then received ObamaCare, which, contrary to the implied name and terms, is the furthest thing from "Socialized Medicine." What the "Affordable Care Act," did was make an open marketplace online for individuals to purchase insurance policies for themselves. They were not locked into their employers plan, and could compare options. Pushing through the radical statements from fellow politicians (the majority of the Republican base), President Obama eventually got the Act passed which included provisions such as not being denied health care due to "Pre-Existing Conditions."

President Obama also made a history-making Nuclear deal with Iran, with them agreeing to decrease their nuclear weapons building supply by 95%. It would mean that it would take them almost two years to make even a basic nuclear warhead. Honestly, for a country that does not have to listen to us in the least, for them to agree to this is not only amazing in itself but impressive.

This is just a beginning list and examples of the many ways the Obama Administration has, opposite the labels, not failed. In fact, I believe many are monumental accomplishments that are ignored or only acknowledged on one side.

None the less, this side is addicted to repeatedly telling it's watchers and listeners of how the Obama administration is "failed" and even "Anti-American," and the rhetoric is not researched or debated. Rather, it is taken and regurgitated back out. This, in basic Psychology, begins a wave of fear. And that sector of the media continues churning it out by the minute.

A vast majority of American's are addicted to fear, and they do not even have the most fundamental realization of the fact. And sadly, we see the repercussions of it play out in our Senate, Congress, and Presidential Elections of the 2016 race.

A True "Green" Focus Makes North Carolina the Best Place to Relocate Or Retire

By Bob Bencivenga

"Reuse and Recycle" has become a popular phrase showing our growing concern and commitment as a nation to finding the best ways to be stewards of the environment and North Carolina is notably one place that embraces Green trends and Green building practices.
The general principals of green building as set forth by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) division consist of four critical areas:

  1. energy efficiency
  2. water efficiency
  3. use of recycled or environmentally sustainable building materials
  4. healthy indoor environmental quality

North Carolina makes sure all of these areas are at work in building projects across the state.
The Green building projects in North Carolina impressively include everything from projects such as:

  1. Eco-dorm at Warren Wilson College just outside Asheville, NC
  2. Renovating an abandoned building which now holds Brown and Jones Architects in Raleigh, NC and;
  3. Rammed earth walls and radiant heating system of the Philips residence in Pittsboro, NC.

North Carolina takes Green building practices seriously and doesn't limit it's commitment to large businesses, schools and private residences. In fact, in 1998, North Carolina State committed itself to be a leader in environmental stewardship. This commitment saved taxpayers money through Green practices. In addition, North Carolina "Greened" all state government buildings.
We at Places of Value have covered the many ways North Carolina has embraced green trends and environmental stewardship, especially Green building practices.
For those interested in "Going Green", follow the lead of North Carolina and while finding that Best Place to relocate or retire in North Carolina here are ten steps to a Green home and Green lifestyle right now.

  1. Recycle and reuse: Get involved with your local recycling program and make it a priority to buy products made from recycled materials.
  2. Turn it off: Turn off lights or appliances that don't need to be on.
  3. Get out of the car: Spend less time driving and more time walking, running or riding a bike. Look for a community that helps you get around without a car.
  4. Watch what you eat: Try eating less meat and more local fruits and vegetables; local farmers will thank you, fewer energy resources are consumed and it's healthier.
  5. Use less water, especially hot water: Switch to low-flow toilets, faucets and showerheads and remember you use a lot of energy to heat that hot water.
  6. Green building/renovation: Take a look what you can do to improve the structural energy efficiency of your home, especially state programs to encourage energy efficient building/renovations.
  7. Change your lights: Compact fluorescent bulbs save energy and money.
  8. Plant something: A tree or garden, anything green.
  9. Update your appliances: Look for more energy efficient models.
  10. Borrow: Instead of running out to buy, think about borrowing first.

Let's not forget that when finding your Best Place to relocate or retire to in North Carolina you can clearly save money by going Green.
Energy efficient homes lower your bills, help your resale value and when combined with Green building practices help the environment as a whole.

8 Different Ways Different States Treat Divorce

I never put much thought into divorce as I have my own personal views but I do believe people should have the right to do so if nothing is working and no joy can come of the marriage. The article below talks about different state laws on divorce. Basically if you choose to go this route, hire a good attorney that specializes in divorce...

8 Different Ways Different States Treat Divorce
By Chad Mathew Taylor

You're thinking about divorce - maybe you need to give some thought to where you live. Divorce laws differ widely from state to state. Here are 8 examples that will show you just how different divorce laws can be.

  1. Want To Get Out Of Paying Alimony? Well, if your spouse has been unfaithful, you want to be living in Georgia. Georgia law allows adultery as a bar to paying alimony. Make your case and alimony will not be awarded.

  2. Want To Get Even? Let's get back to that unfaithful scenario. In 7 states you can still sue a homewrecker for "alienation of affection" if another person has stolen your spouse from you. New Mexico, Illinois, Hawaii, North Carolina, Mississippi, Utah and South Dakota are where you want to be if you want to sue. In some of those states, the name is "criminal conversation".

  3. Want A Fast Divorce? You may think that Nevada is the state for a quickie divorce. Think again. In New Hampshire you can be divorced in a single day. You both just cross the border and stay in New Hampshire - that's taking up residence. There's no minimum processing time or minimum residency requirement. You can "move" to New Hampshire on Wednesday and file on Thursday and be divorced.

  4. Not So Fast? Then try Vermont. In Vermont, you have to have been residents for at least a year. You must undergo a six-month separation, living apart during that time. Meet those requirements and the judge will grant the divorce. But, wait! It's not final for another three-months!

  5. Find Fault In Idaho. If your spouse is a boozer and you've had enough. You can file for a fault divorce on the grounds of habitual intemperance.

  6. Murder She Wrote - Or He Wrote. If you want grounds for a fault divorce in Tennessee, you just have to show that your spouse has tried to murder you "by poison or any other means showing malice." Yikes!

  7. She Has A Headache Or He's Not In The Mood. And, that can be ground for a fault divorce in North Dakota where "persistent refusal to have reasonable matrimonial intercourse" lets you file for a fault divorce.

  8. Still Seeing Each Other? In Delaware, a divorcing couple can continue to live together, but they must be in separate bedrooms. However, sex is allowed if it I an effort "to achieve reconciliation".

You can see how different divorce laws can be - and that's one reason why you want an experienced divorce lawyer on your side. You want an expert divorce attorney who understand the laws in your state and can help you make the right decisions within those boundaries.

Good Reasons To Visit Your Local Farmers Market

By JG Chambers

Food on sale at local farmers markets is fresh and you'll taste the real flavor as it's intended to taste. Imagine fruits and vegetables that have ripened in the field, been picked during market week, and transported directly to you just days out of the field. Flowers by the flat locally produced from seed to harvest, all of seasonal variety, will add color to your home for the months ahead.
No long-term storage taste or color, nor additives to keep colors bright, but instead pesticide free sustainable grown produce brought from field to patron by the grower. Now, this is the local farmers market.
My wife and I visit the Piedmont Triad Farmers' Market in Greensboro, North Carolina several times each month. Much of our produce comes from our frequent trips. We enjoy crafted salsa, pickles, chow-chow and varied canned preserves sold at our market. Of course, varieties of meat regionally raised and processed are available year around, too.
Beyond the genuine, unmasked taste and flavor, there are other reasons to shop local sustainable food markets. One is the experience involved in market day.
We went to the farmers market this morning and to our surprise discovered acres of wood carvings, sculptures and chainsaw art happening on the spot. This event was a Breast Cancer Awareness fair including North Carolina musical talent, wood artist from around the area, and farm equipment featured for sale - a true eclectic experience for sure.
It's not possible to find this type atmosphere at any other event I've seen. Ambiance, alone, is a great reason to visit the outdoor market. I checked the weather on the drive over and found the temperature reading 52 degrees Fahrenheit, with light breeze and clear blue sky - just about perfect for market morning.
Once we were outside the car, the air was fresh and crisp, enhancing the smells of produce, smoked meats, fried pies, early morning baked breads and locally roasted coffees. What better way to enjoy the season - spring, summer, fall, or even winter!
Farmer markets are a great way to support the local economy at its root source - no pun intended. Whether crop farmer, rancher, fruit grower, or horticulturist, we're not talking "get rich quick" jobs here. From personal experience with family and friends, I can tell you local agriculture is a "get rich never" proposition. Often, the sales at local markets keep many of these folks on their family farms.
Local agriculture is best done from the heart with passion. The norm is long hours, at times unbelievable hardship, and moderate financial return. Every dollar spent at local markets supports families who have a serious commitment to sustainable agriculture. When you take home seasonal locally grown food for your family, some of the passion becomes reciprocal.
Consider, too, this is a direct involvement with protecting the environment and valuing natural resources. Less trash is one positive outcome of fresh markets because family farmers have little need of shipping boxes, crates, and other packing materials, since transportation from field to market is short. Along with burning less fuel, refrigeration needs are minimal, and little pollution goes into the environment.
Probably my favorite reason for endorsing local fresh markets is the nourishment value in the food and the experience itself. Beyond the wholesomeness of crops, produce and meats free from pesticides, hormones and antibiotics, you'll find an aesthetic value gained from being outdoors at an occasion with down-to-earth people, proud of the benefits from their labors.
I am also a big fan of heirloom variety produce and flowers. The spice and variety met in short order this morning reminded me that generations ago sustainable living was simply normal living. Today, we picked through baskets and crates of heirloom tomatoes, purple cauliflower, potatoes, mushrooms, and so many others. There were several varieties of wild grapes, and I used to pick one particular type with my grandfather as a kid more decades ago than I care to recall. You sort through, smell and feel the texture of things at the market; the involvement becomes sensory.
Sustainable markets encourage communal active engagement. You talk to the local grower's about their choice of crop variety, how they grow their product, and when it's picked. By doing so, you come to know the real source of your food and how it got to you. A one time trip to market just for this direct contact with the local food source is ample reason for a visit.
Don't be surprised to find the grower's you visit with were in the field until evening the previous day getting product ready for market. And for goodness sake, don't expect the grower to wash the fruit and vegetables. You get the at home experience of rubbing fresh soil off for your own field to table experience.
Local farmers markets are free. There are no tickets sold for entry, no membership requirements or minimum purchases, no strings attached. I believe they're one of the truest forms of free enterprise left in America. Find your local market for a visit even if you have to drive some distance. You'll have a great time.
