Thanks for visiting my website and blog. I've been in the industry of Human Services = helping people for 22+ years. I started when I was 11 years old; my parents wanted me to get an early start on my work experience and so I volunteered at an after school daycare program working with kids younger then me. I've been working with youth ever since.
From there I worked at a summer camp program for disabled children for 5 years as a rising freshman and worked my way up from Junior Counselor to Senior Counselor to Recreation Specialist. During this time I also ventured on into the clothing retail industry and worked as an associate at Aero-Postale for 2 years.
I graduated high school and pursued several other small jobs here and there including apple picking, bar tending and life guarding, which turned into a full time job at Borg Warner in Ithaca, NY and then as lead life guard at Suny New Paltz during the summers.
Sometime during my Junior year I decided I that working with youth was what I was good at and the direction that would be wisest to follow. With this in mind I thought why not expand my experience with youth in terms of age and book a baby sitting job. And so I did, I ended up as an on call babysitter for a 13 month old adopted baby boy from Guatemala by a single mother for my entire senior year...that was an experience I will never forget.
From there I graduated, decided I wanted to work outdoors and so I got a job at the Cayuga Nature Center in Ithaca, NY (my home town) as a Ropes Course Facilitator. Little did I know that this was truly the beginning of how I got to where I am now. I worked with all sorts of groups of all ages youth and adults for a year. As a result I was also hired as one of two ropes course summer camp counselors.
I also landed my first official "Full Time" job as a 1-on-1 Paraprofessional at Dewitt Middle School in Ithaca, NY. I worked this job for a year and I must say it felt like 5 years. Rewarding to say the least but I was ready for something different.
At this point I realized I was on the brink of a long career that was right in front of me but felt like I wanted to explore just a little more before I settled and ventured on into a professional life style. And so it was that I stepped on a plane and took off for 9 months teaching English in Japan. I taught all ages in a conversational style setting. I traveled, met people and learned a lot about myself, one thing being that by 9 months I was ready to go home and go heavy into the career that was waiting for me.
It was then that I came home and booked an Assistant Summer Camp Director position and worked as a Ropes Course Facilitator again.
Not too soon after I moved down to Wilmington, NC and worked part time as a Ropes Course Facilitator and part time as a Teacher's Aid at Coddington Elementary School in a kids with special needs class room setting. Again rewarding but not what I wanted to continue to do for the rest of my life.
Coastal Horizons Center Inc., the agency I worked at part time as a Ropes Course Facilitator in Wilmington, NC eventually hired me full time as a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist I. I began to focus on continuing education credits and experience hours in the field to eventually obtain my Certified Substance Abuse Prevention Consultant certification. This took me several years starting in 2006.
During my time in Wilmington I also volunteered for the Fort Fisher Aquarium and helped out in several ways including, you got it, education to youth and families. This was my fun way of giving back to the community.
I also landed a volunteer position as the music coordinator for the Wilmington Latino Festival. I worked that job for two years moving up to Assistant Director of the whole event.
Eventually I moved to Raleigh and landed the job I have now as a Public Health Educator in 2008. From then until now I have earned my CSAPC certification. I got into distance running and trained for marathons, which motivated me to create and run a volunteer non profit program called We Run Forward that taught families how to distance run for two years. After WRF closed I worked part time for the Alexander YMCA in Raleigh as a Group Fitness Instructor. From there I got certified as an AFAA Personal Trainer and opened my own in home personal training business PlyCore Fitness.
Soon after I also opened up a Professional Training business called D. Ethics, and this is it's page. I have begun to really focus on D. Ethics and hope to expand it's services in the near future as it has been pretty successful so far.
I have also since gone back to school at Wake Teach Community College and enrolled into the Internet Technology Associates Degree program. I have taken 5 classes so far and have earned my Hardware Troubleshooting Certificate. I plan on sitting for the CompTIA A+ certification in the next year as I am interested in computer builds, networking and whatever else IT might strike my interest in the future.
